One of the earliest tenners, the Irish Penal Rosary, came into use during the Penal Times, a time of religious persecution of Catholics in Ireland. This small version of the rosary was more easily concealed than a traditional rosary. One end of the penal rosary had a long, narrow crucifix that could be hidden up the sleeve. At the other end, a ring, used to count decades as it was moved from one finger to the next.
